What is A Metal Disc Coupling?

A metal disc coupling is a motion control component that compensate for shaft misalignment when transmitting torque between two shafts. Commonly used in servo motor applications and high-speed machinery, metal disc couplings are design to be flexible while maintaining high torsional strength under high torque and at high speeds (up to 10,000 RPM or more).

High Stiffness, Low Inertia Servo Motor Couplings

Miki Pulley developed the Servo-Flex line of metal disc couplings to fulfill the high-performance requirements of servo motor applications. Engineered for high-speed and high-precision positioning and ultra-precise control, the flexible metal disc elements allow for varying degrees of misalignment, while offering superior torsional rigidity, low inertia, high response speed, and high torque ratings.  

Servo-Flex couplings are also flexible in the torsional direction, in the uneven directions, and in the shaft direction. All models are totally free from backlash.

Through finite element analysis in the rigorous research and development phase, Miki Pulley engineers designed the optimal size and shape of the leaf spring element. Each model utilizes a specific single element material that emphasizes stiffness and a specific double element material that prioritizes flexibility.

SFC coupling

SFC Model Coupling

The SFC model utilizes metal plate springs to offer high torsional stiffness, while forgiving a degree of misalignment. Using aluminum clad in a clear anodized finish, the SFC performs with low inertia given its torsional stiffness and strength. The flexible element gap also dampens conductive heat transfer from motor to output shaft.

Single and double element configurations are available. Bores can be configured with clamp, taper-lock, or keyed styles.

  • Maximum allowable torque: 184.39 ft-lbs (250Nm)
  • Bore size range: 0.118” - 1.772” (3mm ~ 45mm)

SFF(N) coupling

SFF-(N) Model Coupling

The additional plate spring (disc-pack) connection bolts on the SFF-(N) servo coupling provide higher torsional stiffness, while accepting limited misalignment. Using high grade steel clad in a black oxide finish, the SFF-(N) offers exceptional corrosion resistance pair with torsional stiffness and strength. The flexible element gap also dampens conductive heat transfer from motor to output shaft.

Single and double element configurations are available. Bores can be configured with clamp, taper-lock, or keyed styles.

  • Maximum allowable torque: 221.27 ft-lbs (300Nm)
  • Bore size range: 0.315” - 1.654” (8mm ~ 42mm)

SFS coupling

SFS Model Coupling

This basic SFS variant offers more axial flexibility than its counterparts. When paired with a floating shaft spacer, the SFS may transmit torque at a greater DBSE (distance between shaft ends), while absorbing misalignment. Using high grade steel with a black oxide finish, the SFS coupling offers exceptional torsional stiffness and strength. The flexible element gap also dampens conductive heat transfer from the motor to output shaft.

Single and double element configurations are available as-well as varying lengths of an intermediate floating shaft. Bores can be configured with clamp, taper-lock, or keyed styles.

  • Maximum allowable torque: 590.05 ft-lbs (800Nm)
  • Bore size range: 0.315” - 1.654” (8mm ~ 42mm)

SFF coupling

SFF Model Coupling

The SFF coupling is ideal for feed shafts on machine tools due to its high torque rating. With robust steel hubs (in a black oxide finish), the SFF offers exceptional torsional stiffness and strength. This design assures accurate shaft rotation with precise control. The flexible element gap also dampens conductive heat transfer from motor to output shaft.

Single and double element configurations are available. Bores can be arranged with clamp, taper-lock, or keyed styles.

SFM coupling

SFM Model Coupling

The SFM coupling was developed in response to demanding spindle tool applications. It can perform at high speeds with precise rotation. The outside profile is free of irregularities that would produce noise during high speed rotation. Also, the SFM offers a centering pressure flange in the bore to ensure concentricity. The double elements offer ultra-high rigidity with limited flexibility.

  • Bore size range: 1.102” – 3.15” (28mm ~ 80mm)

SFH coupling

SFH Model Coupling

With a 5900 ft-lbs (8000 Nm) torque rating, and maximum outer diameter of 10.32” (262mm), the SFH is intended for high power applications in large industrial equipment. 

The metal plate spring and steel hub construction allows for misalignment flexibility while offering rotational rigidity and precision.  Also, it is available in a double-element floating shaft configuration.  Floating shafts are offered in specific sizes, or made to customer length requirements.

  • Maximum allowable torque: 5900.50 ft-lbs (8000Nm)
  • Bore size range: 0.866” – 4.528” (22mm ~ 115mm)
